- Traditional Japanese event in which people visit shrines and temples at the beginning of the year to pray for happiness in the new year. In Tokyo, many people do hatsumode to Sensoji Temple, Yasukuni Shrine, and Meiji shrine.
- ・Visit of the General Public to the Imperial Palace for the New Year Greeting
- This is a New Year’s event held annually on January 2 at the Imperial Palace, where visitors are able to express their New Year’s celebration in the presence of Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress and other members of the Imperial Family at the Sangha venue in the East Garden of the Palace. The Emperor, Empress, and other members of the Imperial Family appear several times a day, so this is a unique opportunity to see them in action.

- Sumo is the national sport and a traditional Japanese culture. First Grand tournaments is held at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan.
